Spot Bitcoin ETFs clawed back some ground in July, booking $172.4 million in net inflows to end the month on the right side of zero. That's a win on the calendar, but don't pop the champagne yet — the bigger picture is still ugly.
The year-to-date hole sits at $5.3 billion negative, a deficit carved out almost entirely during brutal stretch runs in May and June. Those two months hit the ETF complex hard, and one decent July isn't going to paper over that damage overnight.

Late-month selling kept the July number from looking even better, signaling that conviction among institutional players remains shaky. Buyers are showing up, but so are sellers the moment prices tick higher. That push-pull dynamic is exactly what chops up a trend before it can breathe.
For active traders, the setup matters more than the headline. Net-positive monthly flows mean the marginal buyer is still present, but the YTD overhang is a real headwind. Watch whether August can string together consecutive inflow weeks — that would be the signal that momentum is genuinely shifting, not just bouncing.
