Japan Services PPI Holds at 3.7%, BoJ Inflation Call Now in Focus
Japan's services inflation stayed at a two-year high, clearing the path for the BoJ to declare underlying prices at 2% this week.
Japan's services producer price index came in exactly where traders expected — 3.7% year-on-year for September, matching August's pace and sitting at the highest level in more than two years. No surprise, no yen pop. But don't sleep on this: an in-line print is actually bullish for the yen because it strips away any dovish excuse the Bank of Japan might have leaned on heading into Friday's decision.
Here's why it matters. The corporate services price index tracks what businesses charge each other for labor-intensive services — think transport, finance, real estate, advertising. When that number stays elevated, it tells you wages are getting passed through into prices. That's the whole game for the BoJ. They need self-sustaining inflation, not the imported-cost variety, and services PPI is the cleanest read on whether they have it. Goods PPI, by contrast, cooled hard — dropping to 6.8% from 7.6% in August as fuel subsidies did their work. Services held firm anyway. That's your signal.

The October 29-30 BoJ meeting is widely expected to end with rates held at 1.25%, so the rate decision itself is a non-event. The real trade is the Outlook Report. If the BoJ effectively declares that underlying inflation has reached its 2% target — something it has never done since adopting that goal in 2013 — short yen positions get squeezed and short-end JGB yields move. Governor Ueda already telegraphed this at the G20, saying underlying inflation was "broadly close to 2%" and the bank couldn't stomach it going higher.
Watch the vote split closely. The two board members who voted against September's hike could dissent again, this time in favor of a cut. That would blunt the hawkish signal and give yen bears a lifeline. Wednesday's Fed decision also lands in the mix, so this is a two-central-bank week with real volatility potential. December hike pricing stays intact for now — this services print just made sure of that.
